ROCKFORD — Medical students at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford found out a piece of their future Friday when they were matched to residency programs at hospitals and health care organizations across the country.
It was part of national Match Day, when medical students across the country learn where they will spend the next three to seven years of their training.
“Few days compare to the excitement of Match Day in a medical student’s journey,” Dr. Alex Stagnaro-Green, regional dean at the university, said in a news release. “In Rockford, we start with a class breakfast and a toast to the students at Anderson Japanese Gardens. The students then come back to campus where their family, friends, faculty, staff and other medical students are gathered together to find out where this class will be headed for residencies around the nation.”
There were 50 students from the Class of 2024 at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford that were matched into residency programs in 19 specialties in 16 states. There will be 15 students who stay in Illinois for their residency, and about half of the Rockford students matched into primary care specialties.
The National Resident Matching Program is a nonprofit organization established in 1952 designed to provide a fair mechanism for matching the preferences with the preferences of residency program directors.
