Organizers say its an opportunity to be among the first to view the new branch. There will be open bar service, fireworks off the river with a champagne toast, gourmet hors d’oeuvres, live music and an art auction.

“At long last, we’re thrilled to be welcoming friends and supporters of the Rockford Public Library to celebrate this beautiful new building,” foundation board member Jim Wojtowicz said in a news release. “We can’t wait to see how RPL can better serve our community with the addition of this new Main Library.”

There is no official opening date yet for the new library, which is being built on the same site as the former main branch that was torn down so ComEd could conduct an environmental cleanup. The power company is covering about $36 million of the $39 million cost.

The Rockford Public Library Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) organization that promotes and supports library activities, hosts fundraising events, seeks sponsorships, conducts annual fund drives and solicits major gift giving.
