OREGON — Softball players from the Rockford region will head to the Netherlands this week to compete in what’s billed as the most prestigious indoor softball tournament in the world.

Athletes from northern Illinois will compete in The Cup this weekend as part of a weeklong trip to the Netherlands. The USA Avengers, which consists of seven area high school players and two collegiate athletes, will take part in the tourney that brings together 16 teams for 48 games in a three-day span.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent my country in The Cup; I’m grateful for the support of my coaches, teammates, and the entire Oregon High School community,” Ella Dannhorn, an Oregon High School junior infielder, said in a news release. “I’m excited to compete against some of the best fast pitch softball players from around the world and make lasting memories on this global stage with my team.”

The team is coached by Jason and JoAnn Yakey and players are: Eva and Emmarie Ostergard of Auburn High School, Dannhorn, Auburn High School graduate Jalyn Yakey, Josie and Jenna Yakey of Auburn High School, Kierah Mitchell of Genoa-Kingston, Belvidere High School graduate Sophia Hulsey and Aubrey Sanders of Forreston.

The renowned tournament has a 25-year history in the Netherlands, following previous editions in Lyon, France. Countries participating include the Czech Republic, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Belgium, The United Kingdom, and the host nation.
