ROCKFORD — The Better Business Bureau is warning online shoppers of common Cyber Monday scams.

The Monday after Thanksgiving, known as Cyber Monday for its online retail sales, can lead scammers to prey on shoppers, the bureau says.

Scammers will be out in full force with all kinds of devious ways to get your attention and get your money,” said Dennis Horton, director of the Rockford Regional Office of the Better Business Bureau, in a news release. “Be alert for misleading advertisements, lookalike websites, and untrustworthy sellers.”

Here are some tips that the Better Business Bureau wants you to know for safe shopping:

1. Beware of fake advertisements

Oftentimes scammers will create similar websites to legitimate online stores to trick shoppers, but there are usually noticeable differences. Pay attention to spelling, contact information and other indicators of a legitimate business.

2. Company research

Read reviews and research the company before buying from them.

3. Shop on secure sites

Secure sites begin with “https” in their web address.

4. Keep antivirus software up to date

Antivirus software will help to prevent fraudulent advertisement and pop-up ads from appearing on your devices.

5. Price check

Compare prices with other companies to be sure that the sale is a realistic price.

6. Use reward or loyalty programs

This indicates a legitimate business and might save you some money.

7. Use your credit card

If you do accidentally fall for a scam, you can take it up with your bank and have the charges contested.

8. Watch for phishing scams

These types of scammers usually contact you and promise deals, free gifts and other false promises.
