Tips to Ready Your Furnace for Winter Season

The leaves are showing their fall colors, and chili sounds like a great dinner option with the arrival of cooler nights. It’s time to prepare to switch your HVAC system over to Heat. We asked our friends at Axberg Heating & Cooling to share a few easy tips to consider before for the coming winter.

Switch to heating mode and set the temperature a couple of degrees higher than the current room temperature. If you don’t hear the heat kick on within a minute, pull off the cover and make sure the wire connections are secure. If the connections are fine, make sure the power source to the HVAC system is turned on. If it’s still not working, check the furnace fan, blower or heat pump.

Change the furnace filters regularly. Some suggest every three months. At least take a look at it every 30 days. You’ll be able to tell if it needs to be changed. Stock up on filters during the warmer months when you can often find a bargain.

Pay close attention to anything that is likely to catch fire. Also remove any household items that sit on top of or in front of your air ducts and return vents.

On an old system, you might have to relight the pilot. Newer systems have electronic ignitors. If the ignitor isn’t working, push the reset button. If that doesn’t do the trick, check your breaker. Still not working? Call in a professional.

Routinely test or replace carbon monoxide detectors as they help protect you from the silent killer.

If you are running low, contact your fuel provider and have them fill it up now. It is much cheaper to buy during the warmer months than in the middle of winter.
